The age old question is whether Samsung or Apple is dominating the market. Well, according to data from IDC which compared smartphone market share last year, Samsung had a significantly larger sales volume compared to Apple and other smartphone makers.

Samsung's success in the Malaysian market was due to the popularity of their budget focused Galaxy J series that stood up despite problems that the company had with the Galaxy Note7. Other companies like Oppo, Huawei and Asus continue to thrive in the Malaysian market with their affordable flagship devices like the Oppo F1, Huawei P9 and ZenFone 3.

IDC estimates that there were over 2.7 million smartphone shipments in Malaysia during Q4 2016 and that rounds up to about 8.8 million shipments in the whole of 2016.
